play time
Play allows children to use their creativity while developing their imagination, dexterity, and physical, cognitive, and emotional strength. Play is important to healthy brain development. It is through play that children at a very early age engage and interact in the world around them.
It all started with a toy box. My son was 18 months and the holidays were quickly approaching. I wanted to make something for him. Something that would last. Something beautiful. Something to inspire play. Something he would love. I sat down and designed a piece I loved and ran to the shop to build it. I started with 3/4” plywood and finished the piece with a fun, playful tangerine dye-stain.
Ten years go by and my eldest niece was about to have her first child. I decided it was time to update the kitchen design and get back in the shop. This time I started with Baltic Birch plywood. Baltic Birch has 13 layers opposed to the normal 5 and is much more consistent throughout leaving a crisp, clean linear edge free of unsightly voids.
The set is now available in two different color ways, pewter with brushed nickel hardware and natural with flat black hardware.
One year later I was in search of a play kitchen. Struggling to find anything that was elegantly designed, sustainable and well-made, I opted to make my own. I created the sink and oven again of 3/4” plywood. This time finished with a beautifully vibrant lime-green dye stain. I found a kitchen mixing bowl that would make a perfect sink and added a real faucet. The knobs on the oven came from an outdoor grill.
I turned my attention to safety and added soft-close hinges to prevent little fingers from getting smashed. The addition of a refrigerator rounds out the set.
